Oil and gas boilers have an approximate maximum lifespan of 15 years. Boilers of that age would typically have an efficiency of less than 70% so if you have an older boiler it is time to consider replacing it with a new high efficiency model which will save on fuel costs and avoid having to contend with a breakdown.

High efficiency boilers have an efficiency of over 90% which is estimated to represent an actual fuel saving of 25% over an older low efficiency model.

The SEI also offer grant assistance to help cover the cost of upgrading your boiler.

Condensing Boilers

The term ‘condensing boiler’ refers to the fact that the boilers produce condense from time to time. Condensing boilers use heat from exhaust gases that would normally be released into the atmosphere through the flue. To use this latent heat, the water vapour from the exhaust gas is turned into liquid condensate. In order to make the most of the latent heat within the condensate, condensing boilers use a larger heat exchanger, or sometimes a secondary heat exchanger. Due to this process, a condensing boiler is able to extract more heat from the fuel it uses than a standard efficiency boiler. It also means that less heat is lost through the flue gases. Condensing boilers are at least 90% efficient, meaning that they turn 90% of the fuel they use into heat.

Combi Boiler

A combi (or combination) boiler is an ingenious space-saving idea, and an increasingly popular choice. In fact, combis now account for well over half of all the new domestic boilers installed in every year. A combi boiler is both a high-efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler, combined (hence the name) within one compact unit. Therefore, no separate hot water cylinder is required, offering space saving within the property. Further benefits of a combi boiler includes hot water being delivered through your taps or shower at mains pressure. So you can enjoy powerful showering without the need for a pump. Another combi boiler benefit is that it can save you money on installation time and costs, since no tank in the roof space means less pipe work and a shorter installation time.

Oil Boilers

For households not connected to a gas network an oil boiler is a key alternative way of heating your home. An oil central heating system works in a similar way to its gas counterparts but you will need to have your oil supply delivered and stored in a tank. Oil is a more efficient fuel than gas, so you'll get a good return on every unit of energy - but like gas, the price of oil continues to steadily rise. Typically, a new condensing oil-fired boiler will have an efficiency of 92% to 93% compared with 85% for a new non-condensing boiler and 60% to 70% of older systems.
